A team of Nasa researchers has discovered that 3D-manufactured copper components could withstand the heat and power required of combustion engines utilized in area launches.

The us house agency and California-based rocket and missile propulsion producer Aero jet Rocket dyne (AR) conducted 19 sizzling-fire checks on four injector and thrust chamber assembly configurations at Nasa’s Glenn research Centre.

“The successful hot fire check of engine parts offers confidence within the additive manufacturing course of and paves the way for full-scale construction,” stated Tyler Hickman, lead engineer for the test at Glenn.

“Additively manufactured metallic propulsion elements are really a paradigm shift for the aerospace industry,” introduced Paul Senick, Glenn venture supervisor.
